This new NASA Hubble Space Telescope image of the Antennae galaxies is the sharpest yet of this merging pair of galaxies. During the course of the collision, billions of stars will be formed. The brightest and most compact of these star birth regions are called super star clusters.

The process of restoring the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope to full science operations is proceeding smoothly according to ground control teams. By about 15:30 CEST on 15 October, the control commands had successfully switched operations over to run on the back-up B-channel; and a few hours later Hubble was brought out of safe mode as the main computer resumed control of the spacecraft. Engineers on the ground were hoping to receive updated telemetry at around midnight CEST to confirm that the instruments are working with the back-up channel and science data is transmitted to ground. Further commands and procedures to be executed today (16 October) will continue to bring different components online and resume a number of key functions, such as communications satellite tracking and checking out the instruments. These last steps in the process are well rehearsed and have been accomplished several times throughout the lifetime of Hubble. Das Universum enthält mehr als unser Auge sieht. Es existiert ein dunkles Reich. Astronomen haben dafür auch einen Namen: Dunkle Materie. Sie macht 24% des Kosmos aus. Wissenschaftler vermuten, dass die dunkle Materie ein kosmisches Netzwerk ist, das wie ein Knochengerüst unser Universum zusammenhält. Doch es gibt noch etwas, das den Wissenschaftler Kopfzerbrechen bereitet. Es ist die sogenannte "dunkle Energie". Eine Kraft, die entgegengesetzt zur Gravitation existiert und die am gesamten Kosmos zerrt. Bereits in den frühen 30 er Jahren des vergangenen Jahrhunderts entdeckte der Astronom Edwin Hubble, dass sich das Universum ausdehnt. Allerdings machten die Forscher vor wenigen Jahren eine verstörende Entdeckung: Die Ausdehnung des Universums wird von Tag zu Tag schneller. Schuld daran hat vermutlich die "dunkle Energie".
